What is Marketing?

Let’s have a look at the definitions you can find online or in my lessons:

Marketing: The process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational goals. (source)

Marketing: Department in charge of the interaction between customers and markets, identifying, satisfying the customers & making profits. (source: Euromed Marseille)

Marketing: perceived by lots of business people to mean simply promotion and advertising, the term marketing actually covers everything from company culture and positioning, through market research, new business/product development, advertising and promotion, PR (public/press relations), and arguably all of the sales functions as well. It’s the process by which a company decides what it will sell, to whom, when and how, and then does it. (source)

I like the last one most because it is the most concrete and objective. It can be summarized below:
Marketing is the process of selling, to whom, when and how.

A marketing department is, for me, simply the place where people have to find ways to sell more and better.

It is the department which supports the sales team, listens to them, caters to customers’ needs and helps to acquire market share.
